What Is On-Torch, or On-Gun, Fume Extraction?

On-torch (also known as on-gun) welding fume extraction is a method of capturing hazardous welding fumes directly at the source—right at the welding arc. This system integrates a fume extraction hose and fume nozzle into the welding torch itself, allowing fumes to be drawn away immediately as they are generated. Unlike other extraction systems that rely on external hoods or arms, on-torch extraction provides continuous, close-range fume control without obstructing the welder's movements. It's a highly effective solution for reducing exposure to harmful fumes in MIG and flux-core welding applications.

The Pros and Cons Of On-Torch Extraction

Advantages of On-Torch

✅ Extracts fumes directly at the source for highly efficient removal

✅ Extraction point moves with the welder, no need move extraction equipment from point-to-point

✅ Increased liklihood of operator compliance/use, especially when extractor is synced to turn on/off with the torch

✅ Ideal for MIG & fluxcore downhand (horizontal) welding, production, manufacturing, and maintenance

✅ On-torch extractor units are typically light and portable

Disadvantages of On-Torch

❌ Not suitable for vertical or overhead welding positions, where the fume tends to escape away from the fume nozzle

❌ Not suitable for Grinding, Stick/MMA welding, Plasma cutting, or Gouging

❌ Fume shroud/nozzle bulk may interfere in tight or complex weld joints

❌ The addition of extraction hoses and components can make the torch heavier or more cumbersome (some are better than others)

❌ Suction flow can disturb the shielding gas coverage if torch & extractor systems are inadequately designed or matched

❌ Torch consumables can be higher cost vs standard torches (depending on the brand/model)

❌ Compared to mobile extractors, on-torch extractors and filters are typically smaller, have lower fume volume capacity, and require more frequent filter cleaning/replacement
